Storage Tips for Units with Concrete
Floors at 44 North Storage
Welcome to 44 North Storage! We want every
customer to enjoy a worry-free, damage-free storage experience. If you are
renting one of our standard, non-climate-controlled units with a concrete
floor, please take a few minutes to review the guidelines below. Following
these best practices greatly reduces the risk of moisture damage, mold, pests,
and other issues that can lead to disappointment (and bad reviews!).
🧱 Why Concrete Floors and
Unconditioned Spaces Require Extra Care
Concrete looks solid and dry, but it is naturally porous.
Even though our slabs are sealed and have vapor barriers underneath, seasonal
temperature swings and high humidity can cause concrete to “sweat.” That extra
moisture can lead to:
- Moisture
buildup or damp spots on the floor
- Mold
and mildew growth
- Warping
or corrosion of sensitive materials
- Musty
odors and general deterioration over time
Knowing this, a little preparation goes a long way!
âś… Best Practices for Safe Storage
1. Use Plastic Bins Instead of Cardboard
- Choose
heavy-duty plastic storage bins with tight lids (bins with gasket seals
offer the best protection).
- Cardboard
absorbs moisture and attracts pests—avoid it whenever possible.
2. Keep Items Off the Floor
- Elevate
everything at least 2–4 inches using wooden pallets, bricks,
plastic shelving, or a plastic sheet as a vapor barrier.
- This
simple step prevents moisture transfer during damp weather.
3. Prevent Moisture & Mold
- Distribute
moisture absorbers—silica gel packets, DampRid, or charcoal
dehumidifiers—throughout the unit and inside bins.
- Never
seal damp items or wrap belongings in non-breathable plastic until completely
dry.
🛋️ Item‑Specific
Guidelines
Furniture & Large Items
- Wrap
wood or upholstery in breathable materials like cotton sheets or
moving blankets. (Plastic traps moisture.)
- Disassemble
large pieces to reduce stress on joints and save space.
- Lay
down a tarp or pad before setting furniture on the floor—especially sofas
or mattresses.
Clothing, Linens & Fabrics
- Always
store clean, completely dry fabrics.
- Use
plastic bins or breathable fabric bags.
- Add
cedar blocks, lavender sachets, or extra moisture absorbers inside
containers for freshness and pest control.
Books, Photos & Paper Goods
- Store
vertically with firm support to prevent warping.
- Use
sealed plastic bins with moisture absorbers.
- Keep
boxes away from exterior walls and off the floor.
Electronics & Appliances
- Whenever
possible, pack electronics in the original boxes or cushioned
plastic bins.
- Never
place electronics directly on concrete.
- Add
silica gel packets to control humidity inside containers.
Pest Prevention
- Never
store food or strongly scented items (candles, soaps, spices).
- Place
natural deterrents—peppermint oil sachets, bay leaves, or commercial
repellents—near doors and corners.
- Confirm
every bin is fully closed and sealed.
Stay Organized & Accessible
- Label
each bin clearly on multiple sides and keep a master inventory at home.
- Store
frequently accessed items near the front.
- Stack
safely: heavier bins on the bottom, lighter on top, and leave a small
aisle down the middle for quick access.
📦 Packing & Space‑Optimization
Tips
- Rent
the smallest space you need and pack it full. Efficient stacking saves
money.
- Gather
materials first: sturdy boxes/bins, tape, markers, and packing
supplies (bubble wrap, packing paper, foam peanuts, towels).
- Use uniform‑size
boxes for easier stacking.
- Lay a
protective cover (plastic sheeting or tarp) over the floor before loading.
- Place
goods on 2Ă—4 boards or pallets to guard against cold, damp concrete.
- Create
an aisle or leave gaps between walls and boxes to allow airflow.
- Inventory
everything—number boxes and list contents on all four sides.
- Be
realistic about weight: a good box tops at 25–30 lbs.
- Wrap
dishes and glassware individually; mark boxes “FRAGILE.”
- Store
mirrors and framed art upright and padded.
- Use
drawers in dressers or desks to hold smaller items—wrap them in towels for
added cushioning.
- Stand
mattresses on end, supported so they remain straight.
- Sofas
and loveseats can be stored on edge to save floor area; cover cushions
separately.
- Shovels,
rakes, and hoses fit neatly inside empty trash cans.
- Remove
table legs when possible to conserve space.
đźš« What NOT to Store
- Combustible
or flammable materials such as gasoline, paint thinner, solvents,
propane, or fireworks.
- Live
animals, plants, or perishable foods.
- Wet
items, which encourage mold and rust.
đź”’ Safety & Security
- Use a
high-quality disc lock or closed‑shackle padlock on your unit door.
- Ensure
valuables are placed toward the back of the unit for added security.
